While the internet quickly dubbed it “Bounce Mode,” Mercedes-Benz actually gave it a much more corporate, serious name: Free Driving Assist. And while it looks like a feature designed entirely for flexing on the boulevard, its original engineering purpose is fascinatingly practical.

What Actually is “Bounce Mode”?

Bounce Mode is a sub-feature of Mercedes’ highly sophisticated E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL system. This is an optional, electrohydraulic fully active suspension that can regulate the spring and damping forces at each individual wheel.

The engineering goal behind “Free Driving Assist” wasn’t to go viral at stoplights—it was to get the vehicle unstuck from deep sand or mud.

When an SUV sinks into sand, the tires lose traction. By violently pumping the suspension up and down, the vehicle rhythmically changes the ground pressure of the tires. This shifting weight creates momentum, helping the tires scoop sand under themselves to “shimmy” the heavy luxury coupe out of a sticky situation.

How to Activate It in a GLE Coupe
