When you have reached a certain level in Nairobi, you stop driving. You start being driven.
In the world of high-stakes business, your car isn’t just transport; it’s a mobile office, a sanctuary from the chaos of Mombasa Road, and an undeniable statement of power. While SUVs like the Range Rover dominate the parking lots of Upper Hill, the traditional full-size executive sedan remains the choice for the purist who values ride comfort above all else.
We looked at the “Big Three” Germans—plus one Swedish contender—to see which one deserves the parking spot reserved for the CEO.

1. Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)
The Verdict: The undisputed King.
The S-Class has been the benchmark for luxury sedans for decades. If you are being picked up from JKIA to sign a deal at the Villa Rosa Kempinski, this is the car you want to be in.
- Powertrain: In Kenya, the most common and sensible spec is the S500. It runs a 3.0L Inline-6 Turbo with “EQ Boost” (mild hybrid) producing 429 HP. It glides. You barely feel the gear shifts, and the engine is whisper-quiet until you need to overtake a lorry on the highway.
- The “Wow” Luxury Features:
- MBUX System: The massive OLED central screen controls everything. It learns your voice and your habits.
- 3D Instrument Cluster: The dashboard gauges actually track your eyes to create a 3D effect without 3D glasses.
- Burmester 4D Sound: It doesn’t just play music; the seats vibrate gently with the bass, letting you “feel” the sound.
- Rear-Axle Steering: The back wheels turn slightly, making this massive boat turn as tightly as a small hatchback in Westlands traffic.

Price in Kenya
Price in Kenya
- On the used market (2016–2019 S 350–S 450) the S-Class can go for KSh 9M – 12M.
- Mid-range models (2017–2020) tend to be KSh 12M – 16M, while higher spec versions (like S 560) can go for KSh 19M – 22M.
- Brand-new or near-new S-Classes (2022–2024) trend toward KSh 25M+, especially depending on import and official dealership offers.
Verdict: The S-Class remains the benchmark for luxury sedans in Kenya — silky ride, plush interiors, and a status symbol in the executive class. If comfort, prestige, and a quiet, refined ride are top priorities, the S-Class shines.

2. BMW 7 Series (G70)
The Verdict: The Tech Disruptor.
If the Mercedes is for the “Old Money” chairman, the new BMW 7 Series is for the tech billionaire. The design is bold (some say controversial) with a massive grille and split headlights, but the interior is undeniably the most futuristic in its class.
- Powertrain: The 740i is the sweet spot for Nairobi. It features a buttery-smooth 3.0L Inline-6 producing 375 HP. It is sportier than the Mercedes, urging the driver to push a little harder through the corners.
- The “Wow” Luxury Features:
- The Theater Screen: This is the showstopper. A massive 31-inch 8K screen drops down from the roof for the rear passengers, turning the back seat into a private cinema.
- Automatic Doors: You don’t open doors; you press a button, and they sweep open for you (checking for obstacles first).
- Crystal Headlights: The daytime running lights are made with actual Swarovski crystals.

Price in Kenya
- As per recent Kenyan market guidance: the 740i Luxury starts at around KSh 12M – 16M.
- The more powerful 750i xDrive goes for about KSh 18M – 25M.
- For ultra-luxury or top-of-the-line variants (e.g. “M760Li” / V12 / highest spec), prices can exceed KSh 32M+.
Verdict: The 7 Series stands out for blending performance (especially in higher trims) with luxury and advanced tech. It’s a great pick if you value dynamic driving, modern features, and are willing to pay more for top-notch performance.

3. Audi A8 / S8
The Verdict: The Stealth Jet.
The Audi A8 is for the executive who doesn’t need to shout. It is understated, elegant, and intelligent. But if you opt for the S8 performance version, it becomes a supercar in a tuxedo.
- Powertrain:
- A8 (Standard): 3.0L V6 (335 HP). Smooth and sufficient.
- S8 (Performance): A monster 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 pushing 563 HP. It does 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds—faster than most sports cars in Nairobi.
- The “Wow” Luxury Features:
- Predictive Active Suspension: The car uses cameras to scan the road ahead for potholes (a lifesaver in Kenya). If it sees a bump, it instantly lifts the wheel to “erase” the impact.
- Rear Foot Massage: On the long-wheelbase models (A8 L), the rear seat passenger can fold down a footrest from the front seat that warms and massages their feet.

Price in Kenya
- On the used / second-hand market in Kenya, A8 models tend to go for around KSh 6 million – 7 million (older units, lower spec).
- More recent A8 models (e.g. 2020–2022) reportedly sell at about KSh 9.8M – 11.8M depending on trim and condition.
- The S8 (2023) globally has a premium build and performance, though exact Kenya market price will depend heavily on import duties — worth noting if importing.
Verdict: The A8 (or S8) is ideal if you want a blend of executive-class comfort and, at the high end, genuine performance — all under a somewhat more modest price tag than ultra-luxury limousines.

4. Volvo S90
The Verdict: The Intelligent Choice.
The Volvo S90 is the outlier. It doesn’t cost as much as the Germans, but it offers 90% of the luxury for 50% of the price. It is stylish, incredibly safe, and has a unique “Scandinavian” calm that the others lack.
- Powertrain: You will likely find the B6 (Mild Hybrid) or T8 Recharge (Plug-in Hybrid). The T8 is surprisingly fast (455 HP combined) and allows you to drive on pure electric power for short city trips, saving significantly on fuel.
- The “Wow” Luxury Features:
- Orrefors Crystal Shifter: The gear lever is made of genuine handcrafted Swedish crystal.
- Bowers & Wilkins Sound: Audiophiles often rate this as the best sound system in any car, period. It has a “Gothenburg Concert Hall” mode that replicates the acoustics of a live orchestra.
- Pilot Assist: One of the best semi-autonomous driving systems for highway cruising.

Price in Kenya
- On the local market, used S90s (e.g. 2017–2018) tend to sell in the KSh 4.5M – 6.5M range.
- More recent or higher-trim S90s (2020–2022) can go up to KSh 11M – 12.5M, especially for well-maintained or fresh-import units.
- Top-of-the-range or late-model S90s (2023–2024) reportedly fetch KSh 13M – 15M+ — depending on trim, mileage, and import statuS.
Verdict: The S90 is an excellent choice for someone who wants elegant, comfortable, and understated luxury without the sometimes ostentatious “flag-waving” of top-end German sedans. It’s often more affordable while still offering a refined experience.
